Abstract

Translation into a foreign language is mostly neglected by translation studies and the relevant manuals, although it is definitely part of everyday translation business. Translating from the mother tongue into the foreign language not only strengthens the ability to express oneself in the latter, but also requires a more conscious approach to the mother tongue and possible weaknesses of the source text. Thus, traducció inversa is an indispensable part of any translator’s education. By means of translating selected tourist texts from Catalan into German, it is shown how some of the difficulties that arise can be overcome (proper names, text conventions, etc.). Due to their mostly operative character, tourist texts are particularly well suited to illustrate the functional approach in translation.
